Degree in Journalism from the University of Vilnius (1959-1964). Diplomatic University of the Foreign Ministry of the USSR (1966-1969). Correspondent for the daily newspaper 'Komjaunimo tiesa', Head of Department (1960 and 1963-1966). Foreign Ministry of the USSR: Third Secretary (in the Embassy in Switzerland), Second Secretary, First Secretary, Counsellor (in the Embassy in the German Democratic Republic), Deputy Head of the Press Department (1969-1983).

Deputy Head of the Foreign Policy Department, Head of the Cultural Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Lithuania (1983-1989); Secretary of the independent from Moscow Communist Party of Lithuania (1989-1990).

Member of the Supreme Council (Parliament) of the Republic of Lithuania, Vice-Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs (1990-1992). Lecturer at the Institute for Journalism of the University of Vilnius (1990-1993); lecturer at the Institute for International Relations and Political Science of the University of Vilnius (1993-1995).

Foreign policy adviser to the President of the Republic of Lithuania (1993-1996).

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Lithuania to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (1996-2001), at the same time Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania to Portugal and Ireland.

Deputy Foreign Minister of the Republic of Lithuania (2002-2004).

Signatory of the Gotland Communiqué (6 August 1989) and the Lithuanian Declaration of the Restoration of Independence (11 March 1990).

Since 1993 has held the rank of an Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Lithuania.

Honours: Knight of the Royal Swedish Order of the Northern Star (1994), Commander of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Lithuania (2003) and Lithuanian Independence Medal (2000).
